Discover the Nakasendo Trail

Explore one of the most scenic sections of the Nakasendo Trail and discover its hidden gems. Stay in charming traditional inns in Tsumago and the peaceful onsen town of Kiso-Fukushima, and wander through the historic streets of Narai and the lacquer craft town of Kiso-Hirasawa.

Although there are a few steep climbs, the trail is not difficult, making it a perfect addition to a journey between Tokyo and Kyoto. The average daily elevation gain is around 600m, running through forests and small settlements.

Itinerary

Day 01

Tokyo to Tsumago

15.8 km 568m gain ~4 hours

We arrange train tickets for your journey from Tokyo to Nakatsugawa, featuring a ride on the iconic bullet train to Nagoya. A warmup run from Nakatsugawa to Tsumago, a beautifully preserved post town along the historic Nakasendo. Stay overnight in a cozy, family-run minshuku. Savor a homemade Japanese dinner and take a peaceful evening stroll through the quiet village streets in a traditional yukata.

Day 02

Tsumago to Kiso-Fukushima

17.1 km 476m gain ~5 hours

The most extensive day on the Nakasendo Trail unfolds with a breathtaking and varied run. This section meanders through tranquil valleys and captivating forests filled with bamboo groves and towering Japanese cedar. The trail leads to hidden villages, old tea houses, and scenic viewpoints. After the day's adventure, stay at a traditional ryokan in Kiso-Fukushima, where you can unwind in soothing hot spring baths and experience an authentic kaiseki dinner.

Day 03

Yabuhara to Narai & Matsumoto

8.4 km 315m gain ~2.5 hours

A scenic run over the Torii-toge Pass to Narai, one of the best-preserved post towns on the Nakasendo. Continue to Kiso-Hirasawa, a small town renowned for its exquisite lacquerware. Enjoy the many local shops offering beautifully handcrafted tableware and furniture. From Kiso-Hirasawa, take the train to the castle town of Matsumoto for your final night.

Day 04

Goodbye to Kisoji

Rest Day Explore & Depart

After breakfast, explore Matsumoto with a visit to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's few original castles retaining its historic interior and exterior. When ready, board a train from Matsumoto Station for your journey back to Tokyo or Kyoto.

Traditional Minshuku & Ryokan

The photos are for reference only; reservations will be made upon request. Depending on the season, standard hotels may be arranged instead. Some minshuku offer rooms with private baths and toilets, but many do not. Accommodations may have sliding paper doors, shared spaces, or rooms without locks. While they are not luxury hotels, they offer a rare and authentic experience in Japan.
